FAQ

Questions frequently asked by parents:

Why have a Private Tutor?

A sound education is the single most effective way of giving your child the best start in life. It is a sad fact, however, that many parents are concerned about the quality of education in schools nowadays.

Some believe that large class sizes and teacher shortages are having a detrimental effect when it comes to children realising their true potential.

Private, one-to-one tuition is by far the best way of improving a student’s understanding, and hence their performance in class, tests and examinations.

However, modern teaching methods and how things are done often differ greatly from a parents own experiences at school. This can lead to frustration and embarrassment when trying to help a child with their homework. This is where I come in. I am experienced in helping a wide range of students from Key Stage 1 to Graduate level in achieving better understanding and improved results.

How can I be sure my tutor is suitably qualified?

Your chosen tutor should ideally be qualified to the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or, failing that, the lesser qualification of Certificate in Education (Cert.Ed.).

OK, so the tutor is qualified - but can s/he teach?

As all of my students come to me as a direct result of recommendations from other clients, there is no shortage of people to ask for references!

Will my child be in safe hands?

You should always ask to see the tutor’s police clearance certificate. This, and personal references, are the best way to ensure your child’s safety.

Does my child enjoy it?

Ask them! - but remember, most students need a couple of lessons before they start to loosen up and feel less inhibited in front of the tutor.

What happens during the school holidays?

Surprisingly enough, this is often the most effective time for students to learn. The pressures of school and masses of homework take a back seat at this time of year. Students are more relaxed and, as a result, are much more receptive to learning.

What happens if my child can’t attend a lesson?

I fully understand that there are many reasons why a student might not be able to attend such as holidays , illness, school open nights, school plays or even a party. I only ask that you try to give me as much notice as possible. This will enable me to fill the vacancy from the waiting list. Please remember this is my living. If a last minute cancellation means I am unable to fill the slot, or if a parent persistently abuses this open-ended arrangement I would expect to be paid for the lesson.

How will I know if my child is coping?

I openly encourage the involvement of parents in any child’s education. I can give the student the knowledge to succeed, but parents are essential for the prolonged support necessary for continuous success.
